A strategic overview of the distinct reader and listener memberships whose literary appetite maps directly to the body of work — THE LAST SCALES and beyond — including three immediately recognized commercial literary bases, a tactical genre, a strategically identified conservation audience, and the singular partnership that unlocks a dormant demographic of global scale.

01

The Africa Faithful

Like myself, this readership holds deep, often personal ties to the African continent — through ancestry, travel, journalism, conservation and humanitarian work, or a lifelong fascination with its landscapes, wildlife, politics, and peoples. They are omnivorous readers: if a book is set in Africa, spans its history, or captures the texture of its cultures and landscapes, they will find it. Geography is their genre.

These readers and listeners are already active in book clubs, podcast audiences, and dedicated Africa-focused communities. They are reliable early adopters who generate word-of-mouth across diaspora networks and cultural institutions.

02

The Literary Tourist

These are sophisticated thriller consumers who judge a book by the quality of its architecture, not its postcode. They have read Le Carré in Beirut, Mankell in Mozambique, and Forsyth across three continents — because the geopolitical stage is irrelevant if the craft is assured. What they demand is precision plotting, layered antagonists, and prose that rewards a second reading.

They are the ideal crossover audience: already fluent in literary fiction but hungry for pace and stakes. As the author of a well-structured African thriller, I do not ask them to compromise — I give them everything they want in a setting they haven't fully explored until now.

The Wilbur Smith Purist

Coming late to reading, due to severe dyslexia, it was Wilbur Smith's African sagas that opened up this world, and his work directly shaped how I write. As a self-confessed Wilbur Smith devotee, I belong to a proven, battle-tested readership numbering in the tens of millions worldwide. We were formed on a specific formula: Africa rendered in sensory depth, protagonists of uncommon physical and moral courage, storylines that move across generations and terrain with confidence and pace. We devour descriptive landscapes, animal encounters, historical sweep, and the particular pleasure of a hero tested by continent-scale forces.

Since Smith's passing, this readership has been restless — we know exactly what we want and are actively searching for the writer who can deliver it. Books such as mine, positioned correctly in this lane, do not need to be announced — the audience will recognise it on the first page.

The Military Devotee

Tactical, action-oriented readers and listeners measure a book by the scale of what the protagonist endures and overcomes. They come for the larger-than-life hero — physically exceptional, tactically brilliant, psychologically forged — and they stay for the operational detail, the camaraderie under pressure, and the satisfaction of a clearly defined enemy defeated.

Lee Child, Vince Flynn, Brad Thor, and Andy McNab have built this readership into a multi-hundred-million-dollar genre. Their audience is predominantly male, 28–55, heavily represented among audiobook consumers, and demonstrates extraordinary series loyalty. My heroes operate on African terrain — where the rules are different, the landscape far more lethal, and institutional support nonexistent — and hit every pressure point this readership is already primed to accept.

The Conservation Advocate

These purpose-driven readers I cater to are distinct and underestimated — emotionally activated, ethically invested, and deeply connected. They are not simply readers who enjoy African settings; they are readers with a personal stake in what happens to those settings. Anti-poaching, habitat preservation, species survival, the politics of national parks and private conservancies — these are not a book's background details to this readership. They are the point.

They read Boyd Varty, Peter Godwin, and Rian Malan. They watch wildlife documentaries and fund conservation and wildlife non-profits. They book safaris with ethical operators. When fiction like mine treats their world with authenticity and moral seriousness, they do not merely read it — they organise around it. Conservation book clubs, wildlife charity fundraisers, safari lodge libraries, and nature documentary audiences are all established channels. The overlap with Memberships One and Three creates a powerful tri-audience cluster around the conservation-adjacent portions of the work.

As far as I am concerned, wildlife needs all the help it can get. That conviction sits at the core of everything I write and is the reason I founded The Quigley Wildlife Foundation.

Proof of Life

What distinguishes The Conservation Advocate from every other readership in this architecture is this — it has already responded. The following endorsements are the evidence.

"As a wildlife conservationist and member of the Explorers Club, I've spent my life cherishing Africa's wilderness. Quigley renders this world — its beauty, its crisis, and its stakes — with the authority of someone who has lived it."
Donovan Smith, MN02 Explorers Club, NGALA Wildlife Preserve
"As a Zimbabwean now running an eco-resort in Costa Rica, I have spent my life between two wild continents. Nothing I have read transports me back to the African bush the way Quigley's writing does — visceral, immediate, and complete — I am back there with every page I turn."
Nicola Bunnett, Founder, Casa Kia Ora
"Blending heart-pounding suspense with authentic insights into wildlife crime, The Last Scales not only exposes the brutal reality of the trade in this enigmatic, little-known mammal, but shares the joy and beauty of Africa's incredible natural world."
Britt Collins, Journalist and Author of bestselling Strays, A Lost Cat, a Homeless Man and their Journey Across America (Simon & Schuster)
"We work on the frontlines to save pangolins. Quigley takes that battle to a different audience — shining a light on their plight and stirring urgency in those who didn't even know they should care."
Lisa Hywood, Founder, Tikki Hywood Foundation (A tribute to one man's passion for life and nature)

The Combat Sports Universe

This readership does not even know it exists — because no one has given it a reason to. Until now.

As a diehard UFC fan, I have woven through the books, sequences built around mixed martial arts: the physics of the octagon, the psychology of the fight camp, the culture of combat sports at the elite level. While my body of work is wildlife and conservation based, the MMA passages were written with the UFC world in mind, linking its fans to an as yet under-discovered literary world.

That world — the UFC's 700 million global fans, its subscriber base, and its voracious social media ecosystem — represents the largest untapped literary demographic in commercial fiction. Twice the population of the United States.

The strategic unlock is a single relationship: Ari Emanuel, CEO of Endeavor, which owns the UFC, and whose reach into the literary and media agency world makes him a uniquely positioned partner. A formal alignment — media rights, the official UFC literary imprint, and sanctioned use of the UFC name — would transform these books from African thrillers with MMA sequences into the founding titles of an entirely new genre. As the author, I become the UFC's authorised fiction partner. The readership, which already exists in its tens of millions, simply needs to be pointed toward the shelf.

I

ANCHOR IN THE WILBUR SMITH SUCCESSION

Position the first title squarely in the Wilbur Smith succession lane. This activates the largest, most purchase-ready existing readership in African adventure/thriller fiction and establishes immediate critical context without requiring explanation.

A reader who has been searching since Smith's passing closes the final page and immediately reaches out to three other fans — the writer has been found.

II

CROSSOVER TO MILITARY THRILLER INFRASTRUCTURE

Clearly position the hero's military and tactical architecture to capture the Lee Child and Vince Flynn readership. The crossover between these two audiences — African adventure and military thriller — is significant, and together they represent a core commercial base for the series.

A reader who came for the tactical architecture stays for the moral complexity and raw authenticity of the African terrain — and pre-orders the next title before the week is out.

III

CULTIVATE THE LITERARY TOURIST

Ensure that the prose and structural quality earns coverage in serious literary and crime fiction press. This membership deserves cultivation — its readers will amplify credibility and drive independent bookshop placement, prize consideration, and international co-editions and translations.

A reader who demands precision plotting and layered prose finds both — and recommends it to their book club, their independent bookseller, and their literary podcast once the story has fully settled.

IV

ACTIVATE THE CONSERVATION NETWORK

Engage wildlife conservation organisations, Nat Geo subscribers, safari operators, and nature documentary audiences as authentic amplification partners. Where the work treats conservation themes with moral seriousness, this membership will respond in kind — championing the books through NGO channels, lodge libraries, ethical travel networks, and conservation media. This membership also reinforces the tri-audience cluster with Memberships One and Three, deepening the African literature footprint significantly.

A reader already fighting for the animals at the heart of this novel closes the final page, picks up their phone, and donates to the pangolin rescue foundation I support before they go to sleep.

V

PURSUE THE ARI EMANUEL / UFC ALIGNMENT

Initiate a formal approach — through an existing Endeavor relationship — to secure a licensed UFC fiction partnership. This single move transforms the series from a strong commercial property into a multi-platform global franchise.

A reader from the UFC fanbase who has never considered literary fiction finishes the novel, searches for the author, and discovers a series titles deep, still growing, and waiting.

VI

ACTIVATE THE COMBAT SPORTS UNIVERSE

When the UFC alignment has been secured, execute a targeted launch campaign into combat sports media channels: UFC Fight Pass, MMA podcasts, fighter social audiences, and subscription lists. This membership is pre-built, awaiting activation. The five preceding readerships coupled with the combat sports universe demonstrate this series cannot be replicated by any other author in the market.

The kick has been thrown. The bout is won. No other author in the market can deliver all six.
